Manifold Instrumentation

Neon processing sign systems are typically provided with appropriate gauges and controls.  EGL, Transco, Voltarc and Electrobits systems are included in section 5 of this catalog.  Vacuum gauges, temperature meters, milliammeters for bombarding and other instruments can be obtained separately through special order from the manufacturer.  We stock butyl phthalate oil (for u-gauges).

Milliammeters (Transformer Loading)

Milliammeters are used to ensure that proper transformer loading is achieved.  Transco's AC Milliammeter is available and has a range of 0-75 MA.  This instrument, connected in series with the transformer and tubing, provides a simple, portable and accurate method of measuring secondary load current.

Tube Testers

The Electro-Technic Products BD-10AS Spark tester is very popular in neon shops for testing faulty tubes, tube seal leaks and manifold leaks.  It operates on 120 VAC.  When the on-off switch is depressed and the tip placed against the tube or manifold, a high frequency spark is generated through the glass.  The section will glow if under vacuum.  Pinhole leaks can be identified by an intense concentration of white spark discharge.  Various color patterns produced by the discharge can be used to infer level of vacuum.  We stock this device.

EGL’s Portable Slimline Tube Tester is a battery powered, high frequency generator for testing pumped neon tubes and fluorescent lamps. It operates on four AA batteries, and tubes being tested will illuminate in a pulsating manner when “good”. It includes a leather case 6 7/8” long, 1 ½ “ wide and ¾” deep and is part number 741200.

The Transco/Masonlite Mark III tube tester is a portable, battery powered device used to detect faulty neon tubes and fluorescent lamps.  It includes a telescopic aerial for extended reach and a positive action rocker switch.  A good section of tubing will illuminate if touched by the metal disc or aerial while the switch is depressed.  This device is especially handy for on the job service and trouble-shooting.  We stock the Mark III tester.

Voltarc's KOLOR-CHEK'R  is a portable, low-cost checking device used to determine the color of unpumped sign tubing. Weighing only 7 oz., it is convenient to use in your shop, service truck or warehouse.  It is available from Dixie Neon by special order.
